AMAZING PROG

This Indonesian quartet led by bass player Iman Ismar skilfully mixes symphonic psych prog with heavy metal and a touch of world music and local ethnic sounds. They blend the howling psychedelia of OZRIC TENTACLES, PINK FLOYD and PORCUPINE with the metal riffs of DREAM THEATER and FATES WARNING.

They have released two albums todate, the eponymous "Imanissimo" (2002) and the ambitious "Z's Diary" (2004) which features close to 20 guest musicians and singers. This is a 73-minute concept album divided into four movements recounting the story of a certain 'Captain Z' from birth to manhood. Punctuated by female narration and haunting choirs as well as the occasional guitar, bass, trumpet or piano solo, the soundscapes vary from contemplative spacey moods with OSRIC-like repetitive grooves to furious passages of demented guitar riffs and fiery Jordan Rudess-like keyboards. Although a crisper sound would have enhanced the excellent musicianship, the album is altogether a fine piece of space prog.

Fans of the DIXIE DREGS and particularly OZRIC TENTACLES will certainly want to check them out.
