SINKADUS
Symphonic Prog Sweden
Fredrik Karlsson and Robert Sjцback began playing together in 1987. At first they played mostly covers from a wide range of rock music, but soon more and more progressive rock songs were introduced as they managed to convince the other band members that this was the good music.
During a gig in December 1990, the drum podium broke and sent the drummer sprawling on the stage floor. The drummer decided he had had enough and left together with the singer, throwing drums in all directions.
Early 1991 Rickard Bistrцm joined on drums and with a new singer they began to rehearse again, now playing only progressive rock covers. They also began to write original music.
They played a few gigs with this line-up, including an outdoor "school's out" festival. They also played twice in a local rock competition, but they never qualified for a second round (Surprised? No, I guess not). This year also saw the first recording of an original song.
Until this point Fredrik had been playing both keyboards and flute, but now this was beginning to be viewed as a limitation, and they begain to seek a flute player.
In the spring of 1993 Linda joined the band, playing flute and singing backing vocals. During this period the band had several different singers and was finding it difficult to find one that seemed to fit. When their current singer quit, Rickard started doing the vocals with Linda.
During the autumn of 1993 they took part in forming the Gothenburg Art-Rock Society together with Bjцrn Johansson. They continued writing material, changed their name to Sinkadus, and started rehearsing with the psychedelic band 'Roots of Echo' to record some tracks for their second album. Four tracks were also recorded, but they found most of them "too symphonic" and only one appeared on the album. At the 1994 Gothenburg Art-Rock Festival Sinkadus played one song of our own, (Еgren, which at the time was called Salarna), and also played some songs with Roots of Echo.
Soon after this, the bass player quit and they decided to look for a replacement. Finding a bassist that fit was as difficult as finding a singer, and after a while Rickard suggested that he could take on playing bass and they could start looking for either a bass player or a drummer, whatever could be found first. It happened to be a drummer, Bo Guting. He performed at two gigs with Sinkadus. The first of which was in a little pub in Gothenburg where the band was squeezed together in a corner of the bar, the bartender shouting above the sound of the band to the customers who wanted to buy beer.
Sinkadus now began rehearsing again, writing and playing a few gigs. The first singer, back in 1987, had played cello before and they had tried to convince her to take it up again. They never succeeded. But now, Rickard knew that Lena played cello and they started trying to convince her to join. This time they were luckier, and in 1995 Lena joined the band.
In the fall of 1995 the drummer left. In May of 1995 Sinkadus had played a concert with Roots of Echo at '7:ans Цlhall' in Gothenburg. Since the last time, Roots of Echo had assembled a full band and when Sinkadus met them they were impressed by their new drummer, Mats. They contacted him and asked him if he could help them record a demo tape. He agreed and they began rehearsing in December of 1995, they went into the studio in February of 1996. During the rehearsals, Sinkadus was asked to play at the 1996 Gothenburg Art-Rock Festival, and they asked Mats if he could help out with this as well. He did, and it was now obvious that he should join permanently.
The band had originally recorded the demo to put definite versions of the songs on tape and to have a tape to send out when looking for gigs. But since they were a full band again and had a newly recorded demo, they thought they might as well send it to some record labels. To their surprise they received several answers from interested labels. They signed on with Malcolm Parker at CYCLOPS and re-recorded the songs. The recording and mixing was done over three weeks in September, 1996. In February, 1997, CYCLOPS released Sinkadus' first CD, "Aurum Nostrum". On March 5th Sinkadus played a gig in Gothenburg and on the same day Malcolm contacted them and asked if they would like to play at Progfest97 in Los Angeles. They did! The concert was recorded and released by Cyclops, along with the original demo versions of the songs from 'Aurum Nostrum' as a double CD, 'Live at Progfest'.
Sinkadus recorded their second studio album called 'Cirkus' in 1998. During the end of 1999 and the beginning of 2000, Linda and Lena both said their goodbyes and parted ways with the band to spend more time with their families. In Janurary, 2000 Daniel joined the band, adding a second guitar to Sinkadus' lineup. In April, 2000, the band was again complete when they once more added flute and vocals by taking on Van, from the U.S.
Sinkdus is now playing as a five piece band after Daniel's departure.
